According to American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry upper age limit for a child to visit child specialist dentist is 18 years.

All the parents are advised to make the first visit to the child dentist as soon as the first tooth erupts in the mouth, and it should not be delayed till the first birthday.

Child dentistry is an age-defined specialty and includes all the dental procedures to be undertaken for a child.

At our hospital, we provide the child-friendly environment so that the fear factor in the child is eliminated. There is a special Toy room/Play area at our hospital to make a child-friendly environment in the hospital. The child is motivated to keep his/her oral cavity clean at our center and the positive attitude towards his/her oral health is instilled in the child

Various procedures performed at our clinic for children are:

Fillings

Whenever there is a decay in the tooth or whenever parents watch even a slightest black spot or any isolated opaque area on the tooth, parents must take their children to Paediatric Dental Surgeon. The decay is removed, and the cavity is restored or filled with white colored cement or resin material so that the further progression of the disease is stopped at once.

Tooth Removal

The teeth that are badly decayed must be evaluated by the dentist. Such teeth are removed carefully in our centre, and painless extraction is performed on the dentist for kids so that the further infection progression is ceased.

Indirect and Direct Pulp Capping

This is a procedure that we perform when the dental decay is very extensive and close to the nerves and blood vessels of the teeth. Here medicament/medication is placed in a layer immediately next to nerves of the tooth, and then the cavity is sealed with cement. Over a period of time, this medicament helps in healing of tooth.

Space Maintainers

Many a times parents don’t bother when the tooth is lost and have the impression that the new teeth will come by itself and they don’t have any knowledge about the consequences of the tooth lost at the early stage. This early loss of a tooth may eventually lead to space loss in the arch due to the migration of the adjacent teeth into that space and decrease the space. Due to this, the net space that is available for the new tooth to erupt becomes insufficient. Because of all these reasons the successor tooth which has to erupt in a given space either erupt out of the space or out of alignment, sometimes tooth even fails to erupt when there is the complete loss of the space. In such conditions, your dentist will advise you for space maintainer to maintain the space that has been created due to tooth loss.

Various types of space maintainers can be given to the patient. Some of the space maintainers are mentioned as under:

1) Band and loop space maintainer
2) Lingual arch space maintainer
3) Nance palatal space maintainer
4) Transpalatal space maintainer
5) Distal shoe space maintainer

Kindly consult your dentist which space maintainer suits the need for your child and dentist will himself evaluate the most appropriate space maintainer and give it to your child.

Broadly space maintainers are also categorized as
1) Functional space maintainer – which contains teeth
2) Nonfunctional space maintainer – that do not contain teeth

Flexible Dentures

Some patients have the allergy to acrylic, Nickel or other materials that are used in the dentures. For such patients, Flexible Denture is an option. These are removable prosthesis that is made up of thermoplastic polyamide material, ie. Semi-crystalline Nylon in composition.

Though this material cannot easily break but a major disadvantage is that flexible denture base allows bacterial accumulation more easily than the conventional hard acrylic denture base. So the patients wearing such prosthesis are advised to clean their denture more thoroughly and on regular basis.

Root Canal Treatment

In children cavities should be treated as early as possible in order to avoid more extensive treatment, ie, Root canal treatment or more appropriately called Pulpectomy. When there is extensive decay in the tooth that involves the nerves and blood supply of the tooth, the whole tooth gets infected. In such a situation, Root canal treatment in Kharar of the tooth is performed.

In this procedure, the cavity is made, and decay portion of the tooth is cleaned, the canals of the tooth is cleaned by various irrigants and chemicals to disinfect them, and the biocompatible, inert material is placed into the canals and cavity is restored.
